I replayed Fire Red a fair amount, and the starters just got boring, but what other options are there before Brock as a replacement? Butterfree? Pikachu? Like hell am I touching the ugly monkey. I'd rather grind Pikachu up 20 levels in order to quick attack Onix to death.
Brock is uniquely difficult in the entire series because besides your starters your other options for him are absolute garbage. When I got Emerald I just completely stopped replaying Fire Red. You have almost three times as many options before the first gym.
It's self-imposed, though.
