It's pretty realistic too. Children's media always tells the tale of how with enough effort, you can get everything you want. This doesn't work in real life and you have to cope with the fact that all your effort might amount to nothing in the end, and yet life continues. Exactly what happened to Kieran and it's refreshing to see how a character copes with that instead of simply getting to his goal.
