Also while Kanto is pretty late in the game (last quarter), it's not like you can get evolution stones only after beating Red or anything. It just sucks compared to gen 1 which offered you the choice to evolve any stone evolutions a lot earlier, as soon as you get to Celadon, and then potentially miss out on several cool levelup moves on those monsters.
