It's fine designwise, Growlithe is just leagues better. Anything it can do, other fire types do way better. Terrible movepool in earlier gens, mediocre stats across the board. Better physically attacking fire types emerge, it turns to defensive sets, Heatran comes along and does that job better. Its movepool finally gets worthwhile additions in Gen 5, Darmanitan comes along. Its good in VGC for a while, then Incineroar comes along and we all know how that went. Fast forward to the current day and Arcanine sits in NU. Here's hoping that Growlithe will get a worthwhile split evo or regional evolution ala Obstagoon to finally do Growlithe justice.
