MPM didn't wanna be about these characters, it wanted the spotlight to be squarely on the monsters, which is why a lot of people resent it because they find trainer interactions and relationships more engaging than monster friend of the week, and would rather the monsters themselves be relegated to plot devices for the characters to navigate as they primarily interact with eachother. MPM02 was the clear exception because it was laser focused on Misty's return.
I don't blame them, but it's unfortunate how much they pan the show for not being something it's not even trying to be.
