The writers have realized that the anime's dynamic has been changed by making Ash a champion, and they can't make make a series that follows the the same format of those that predate SM. Ash winning the Alola League makes him a champion that has to prove himself, and a series in which he has to prove his champion status to his fellow champions from every other region is infinitely more interesting than anything that's been done before by the anime.
