There should be more split evolutions. Not just one stage either, the split evolutions could then evolve again or also have more split evolutions. Starters should have multiple split evolutions based on story decisions or in-game mechanics. Regional evolutions should be extended to locations inside a region as well: a pokenon could have a different evolution depending on where it evolves in the region.
