But if you're looking for an "artistic", "visual" direction to go in, I'd suggest really exaggerating some theme so you get what stylistic direction to go in. The games already has exaggerated styles between generations (look at all the grunts). So for your game to have satisfying artistic flavor I'd suggest you go REALLY over the top with 80's themes.
