I don't hate him but this guy never really clicked with me. And everyone refers to him a rival which always confuses me. You fight him once (if you could even call that a fight) and then he just kind of shows up at the end of the game. He has literally no effect on the plot. (His NPC family does more to help you on your journey.)
And the remakes did almost nothing to expand on him other than confirm he beat the gyms and set the stage for your final battle with him.
