Why wouldn't they just make a snake instead of making a crocodile then? Also, La Cuca exists and that feels like a much more viable route given Portugal/Spain.

I've been saying this for months but we have an IRL legend of a crocodile witch with blonde hair connected to Portuguese legend and it feels like occam's razor is the far more plausible option. You have to remember that Starters are meant to be people's first Pokemon in general so they don't get the super wild concepts.

My money's on it being a giant shout-out to La Cuca. They could even tie it's "magic" to swamp fumes since those catching fire started all kinds of witchcraft/boogen legends.
