The story is a stock-standard hero-saves-the-day story, so this Malamar's defeat is inevitable. Through the story they learn more about his personal challenges and how it has lead him to villainy. For instance, this Malamar can't hypnotize, and relies heavily on mindgames. Both Lian and Ken eventually not fear him anymore, and in some sense kind of sympathize with him just a little.
