Humans aren't necessarily designed to be monogamous, but we are designed to use sex as a means of forming bonds with another person, as a means of enhancing the chances of survival of the pregnant mother and resulting offspring. Just cuz its gay doesn't mean the mechanism isn't the same - sex releases oxytocin, which is the chemical associated with bonding with another person. Its an inevitable byproduct of sex. Consistent exposure to it without a regular partner will result in increased tolerance of its effects in regards to bonding as described.
