Just out of curiosity, after my runs I looked up the teams of one of the recurring bosses and he uses only 2-3 mons in the first few encounters, and 4 in the last one. In the romhacks he uses 6 demons on the first fight, and it was great. I think my overall experience was better for it, but everyone's different.
In my 3rd playthrough of gen 7 I played Photonic Sun (by Buffel Saft) instead of Supernova Sun (by Dio Vento, whose hacks I played twice prior), and the buffs to several mons were really awesome. Shell Armor Golisopod, speed buffed pseudo-legend Vikavolt, Berserk Primarina, just to name a few.
If you don't have great grasp of type matchups yet or teambuilding I'd prolly stick with the standard games.
