>>20862140The thing these idiots just fail to grasp when spouting this shit is that an evolution is a BRAND NEW POKEMON. It has to be it's own thing, compare Yanma and Yanmega, for example. Yanmega is quite a radical departure from little Yanma, since we go from a simple dragonfly to a vicious, strong prehistoric version of it. And while there isn't anything wrong with that, Yanmega is still it's own entity. The Mega Cradily in OP can't work as an evolution because it's too similar in appearance to regular Cradily. There is no justification for this taking up a Pokedex slot, especially now that we have megas to power up weak Pokemon, instead of introducing a brand new monster to essentially replace them.
This is also why I think Magmortar is utter shit, because it's essentially just a fatter ugly Magmar that's inexplicably gained cannons for arms. Why was this it's own Pokemon? Why couldn't we have gotten something else? But if it was a mega, Magmortar's design suddenly works a lot better, as it now looks like an extreme powerup to Magmar rather than it's own thing. To contrast, Electivire is great because it works as an evolution to Electabuzz, standing as it's own unique monster.
In summary, there's a fine line to this. If you're going to give something a cross-gen evo, you should consider why it needs one as opposed to a mega, and why adding a whole new Pokemon should be justified when megas can do the same thing conceptually. Not that I don't like cross-gen evos, though. Ideally, we would have both.
