Now I'm NOT saying it shouldn't be cute and friendly. A:TLA is a PERFECT example of what pokemon should be like, minus the whole war thing. I mean, I mean it should have cheery and fun character, (coupled with actually good writing and jokes) but they can actually get serious when needed. A big part of this would be an evil team that ACTUALLY does evil shit.
Another show that handles cute vs edgy wonderfully is Gravity Falls, especially the earlier episodes. The quality kinda drops off after summerween.
I would also like something genuinely scary or spooky to happen in the games at least once. A ghost type gym or catacombs could work. A good example of this done right is the game Okami inb4 weeaboo. I only played the one for the wii, but I loved that even being as cute and happy as this game was, the first boss was a fucking Samara spider. This and the haunted ship were actually pretty creepy, and were a nice break from the normally cute gameplay
I also loved gates to infinity, even though the lack of post game was rage inducing. The story was just fantastic and the scene where Kyurem flat out murders Hydreigon and then beats you almost to death was amazing if only just for shock value.
