At maximum defense, there's practically nothing that can stop the King, no single punch or wallop can shatter its castle-like mask-face-thing.
All the more reason why it's incredibly pertinent to take it out as soon as possible. Odysseus takes the Champion up on his offer, and rushes at the chance to strike the King from up close.

With a violent lunge, he uses Shadow Claw and slashes the King's face, but the fossil does not wince. Instead..
