Pokemon, at its core, is a very simple game with code that dates as far back as 2002. Code that they use to dictate the battles, code that they use for party building, code that they use for the PC to store your 'mons, and code to fetch and ensure your pokemon is fucking legal.
All that shit is still in use today.
They have been porting their aged as fuck code to games of today, so don't give me that shit of "they have to handle the transfer between games" as if it's some big monumental leap that requires the likes of Iwata to pull them out of the fucking gutter.
The code for each pokemon hasn't really changed, save for a few numerical changes for the stats and a few extra lines saying "it can learn X move at X level." It's nothing groundbreaking and is as simple as coding fucking Don't Starve characters.
