Back in Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, always introduce us to a new character in the League who always befriends Ash and later turns out to be the one to kick his ass (Ritchie, Harrison, Tyson). Here instead, Ash never meets Tobias until their battle, much less befriends him like past opponents. But from day 1 we learned from people like Barry and Conway about the existence of a trainer who owns a super OP Darkrai. He is there, lurking in the shadows and everyone knows of him.I don't know if it was good writing, but it sure was realistic and for that, i give it points.
