Just about anything can work alright in game but this in particular wrecks shop. Even if it can't really handle whatever pokemon you're fighting it can still deal out leech seeds and status ailments and pass to another pokemon.
The game is so easy and it's all because they made a pokemon that evolves into a strong grass/fighting type super common super early in a game where your main antagonists use water and dark and water/dark pokemon. Is there anything that early in the game that gives team magma a hard time? You can pick mudkip as your starter, but sapphire gives you a silver bullet regardless of what starter you pick.
