Volcarona was revealed to be his deceased partner pokemon in BW2, so that means the Volcarona he uses is actually his dead pokemon instead of another one. In the anime he only has a Bouffalant, and in pokespe, Escavalier and Accelgor. No mention of the sun moth.
My point is, could every Alder battle be a what-if and that Volcarona is a memory of his late pokemon? As in what a pokemon battle could be against the champion if he had his ace still with him.
