I have seen the years when literally everybody thought pokemon was cool and everybody was collecting pogs, cards, toys, coloring books, posters, bags, keychains, it was featured in news, magazines, etc, and everyone who had the game was elite.
I have seen pokemon franchise's peak with the GP, and yet I don't count Gen 1 as my favorite. I'm not really seeing the connection you're trying to draw here
