It was very good throughout. The characters are pretty well-written and all undergo development rather than being one-dimensional staples; the mechanics are fun to learn and exploit; the graphics look good, the music varies but has some highlights too; and grinding is easy. I really have no complains other than that the dungeons are really bland and repetitive, but you spend a lot of time in the overworld anyway.
That said, it strays far from the original theme of Digimon: having one—at most two—partner Digimon whom you take good care of, raise, and bond with. Instead it takes a “catch 'em all” approach that's more at home with Pokémon. But it does it very well, and the game is certainly more polished than any Pokémon game this generation.
