Replaying Y right now. The first thing I'm noticing is how boring it is. It's pretty to look at but that's about it.
In each game there is usually something going on, you run into the evil team, you run into your rivals, you fight Gym Leaders. In Y the Gym Leaders feel like normal trainers and the rivals barely put up a fight either. The most interesting part of the game is getting the Mega Ring.
Compare that to Johto where you jumped from gym to gym finding cool stuff like the Red Gyarados, or BW where you run into N and your rivals all the time.
It's just like there's nothing going on.

>Bad pacing
>Forgettable bad guys
>Pretty but forgettable locations
At least Serena is somewhat attractive.
