He could've been much more of an asshole to us than he ended up being, it would've been totally justify. But I guess they wanted to show how emotionally mature he is.
I like to imagine he kept going out of pure spite for his parent, even picking up cooking with the goal to eat healthy instead of eating microwaved garbage (in the lighthouse lab, you can inspect the stove, saying it was used recently, and the microwave, saying it hasn't been used in a long time). Cause most teenagers definitely would've withered in such a miserable position, but he somehow mustered the power to take charge of his life by himself.
