They have a rivalry that develops throughout the original games, and even through subsequent games that evolves and becomes something more than just "Oh I wanna be a better trainer than this kid." They both are striving to be something great and want to show their skills and want to be appreciated by the other.
Then in HGSS Blue calls you up just because he wants to talk about Red. In Gen 7, now they've traveled together to a tropical region?
You can say they're not gay all you want and they're just friends because it's not canon or confirmed and that's fine. But I will still just do me and believe it. I simply felt like typing my reasons and why other people may like it too.
