He doesn't know anything about pokemon liking battles, Pokemon Refresh, Camps, Contests etc. He was a pawn that was molded for one purpose: to earn one of the BW Legendaries' trust and become the chosen hero for Ghetsis and Team Plasma. I don't how that makes him a brainlet.
On another note, I disagree with what you said about Pokemon rivals. Rivals like Blue, Silver and Barry are good, despite not having much story to them, because of how competitive they are, and how they inspire you to get stronger over the course of the game.
