Its easy to dismiss the fact that people didnt like it back then today, but the big issue with it was always that it just dropped all 500 or however many pokemon that came before it in the first 4 gens and ignored that they even exist. Not saying it should have Pikachu and ChRizard all over the game but dropping every pokemon instead of world building was a huge mistake.
Also it followed HGSS, the greatest games ever made even still to this day, it had a lot to live up to and whilst it was good it was nowhere near great or even as good as HGSS. If it just had following pokemon, and kept many of the older monsters and was exactly the same in all other ways it would have been twice as successful. If it had a second region at the end it would have gone down as the best games ever, not just amongst zoom zooms.
