If we're limited to thinking purely in terms of what the game mechanics can do, then all Pokemon can only conform to one of, what was it again, 16, 25 basic personality traits with no more depth than that, and people politely take turns in battle? I don't think limiting interpretation to just the scope of the games is a very fun way to examine the series.
