No, but they were kind of just THERE. To the point that they were actually a bit hard for me to appreciate, having played the originals only 6~ years before and still being able to play Gen 1 just fine. But having it in a in sleeker 60 FPS form with running shoes and better TMs is nice all the same, and new mechanics make it a fresh experience.
I actually liked that the Sevii Islands were so often bare and just there to be explored for their own sake, because that's how Gen 1 rolled most of the time, and its definitely something Game Freak would only implement in that way during the GBA era.
