They are a bit less saccharine, not trying nearly so hard to be upbeat at every point like the later games can be. Still kids games through and through, but that in tandem with their darker bits and the low detail Game Boy sprites. Let's Go may be built on lasagna mountains but I can appreciate making Kanto so much brighter.
