Her story starts out slow and it's very much focused on the shipping subplot at first, but starting around the summer camp arc (XY39) her character experiences a turning point and starts to evolve until where it is today...a beautiful blend of cuteness, unquenchable ambition toward her dream, emotional authenticity, and a qt as fuck romance subplot.

Few of us here would disagree that her character could have been handled much better at the start of the series. But Serena fans feel the development she's undergone since XY39 (when she basically realised that she really needed to find a goal) has really helped out. Since that poor development is in the past and came so early, we don't really hold it against her overall character that much.

I was rewatching XY39, and for some reason I found this scene to be kinda depressing especially with the bgm. It's like the crushing weight of reality had finally hit Serena, and she really seemed genuinely empty inside having realized that she was traveling around without a concrete dream/goal in sight.

I feel like this scene is when my impressions of Serena as a character really started to turn around and become more positive...they haven't turned back since. Even though I still see her personality as being a bit bland, I really like her character for how emotionally genuine she is.
