Who unironically uses fucking Stantler on their Johto teams who isn't 5 years old? Also, being able to build your full team up right from the start isn't the win you think it is. Most of the early game mons are the ones most players will inevitably replace for the stronger mons found later in the game. You're not going to face down opponents wielding Dragonites with a Raticate from Route 2, you're gonna be using something with more power, something only found later on in the game. Having no new options until before the 8th Gym is a fucking travesty. Also

People don't praise Hoenn because you can still use Pikachu and Gengar, they praise it because of the cool new mons they brought with them. Johto brings very little of note to the table that isn't Scarmory or Tiranitar, and having access to Pinsir and Gyarados doesn't make up for that
