It's mostly because the level design is shit. Alola has no cool locations to explore and no dungeons besides Vast Poni Canyon which is still held back my Lillie's asinine interruptions and worthless dialogue. And UBs are not great, they're fucking sacrilege.

Alola is small and immensely lacking in complexity. It's streamlined to a fault and very boring.

The level design is indubitably the worst of any main game yet. The Sevii Islands from FireRed and LeafGreen alone have more dungeons, puzzles and even enterable buildings than the entire Alola region.
