Zoomer here.
I recently played through Blue on a 3DS and I've gotta say that it's one of the best games in the series and out of all mainline pokemon games it is the most replayable. I never ran into any bugs, glitches, or issues except for the ones that I purposefully did because they were fun to pull off.
The art isn't that great and most of the sprites are unappealing, with some of them being unintelligible, but that didn't stop me from forming a connection to them and the designs, yes even ball with face, are great when you know what they're supposed to look like.
Most of the issues that people list with Gen 1 are things that you never run into or only really matter if you're a compfag.
Even if some of the reasons Gen 1 is so great were unintentional or due to limitations, I wish they were carried over and expanded upon in later generations.
Things like doing gyms out of order is such a fun aspect of these games and I wish newer games were as this nonlinear. The bare bones story really adds to this, because it unintentionally added a sense of mystery to the games and the speculation and theories that spawned from this are more interesting than any story that has ever appeared in the mainline games.
It's not my favorite gen but that's probably due partly to nostalgia I have for other gens.
The never games keep pandering to Kanto, but they never embrace it. I wish they would.
