Thinking that Misty was unpopular only shows how completely new you are to the series; then enjoying the antics to the most generic mary-sue and all-around rehashed character the show has ever seen on top of it, it's pretty clear that you've probably never even seen the original series.
And you really need to watch a sub of the original series if you believe it was solely in the English version. They weren't subtle about it in either and both used the the same general subplots concerning Misty, and a writer (one) wanting to close out on an obviously dropped storyline nine years afterwards should be surprising to absolutely nobody. And even then, Misty was getting jealous of Macy AFTER Shudo left the series, so not even the writers left were going in the direction he supposedly wanted it to go.
