Gen 7 wins for pokemon design because there's literally three mons in the whole dex I don't like. Two of them are nfe, one is a form. I play pokemon for the cool monsters, so this is a huge factor.
Gen III wins in the enjoyability aspect because the second reason I play pokemon is the adventure, and Hoenn is just the best region for adventuring. Gen VII places so highly because, while the map design is pretty subpar, it's the most I've enjoyed the writing in this franchise. Gens I and II are pretty barebones in terms of writing, gen III is pretty meh, Gen IV, V, and to a lesser extent VI take themselves a bit too seriously, but VII was genuinely hilarious on multiple occasions. I don't give two tits about Cyrus's edgy nihilistic world recreating plot because it's going to get stopped anyway, or muh ocean because first of all it's retarded and second is unthreatening because the games have always been easy, or N's whole shtick, but Team Skull dicking around, photobombing hikers, and "get out" are great. I ended up liking or loving every character except Lillie.
