There are legitimately a number of places in RBY where your next objective isn't intuitive. And lest we forget, proverbially everyone has stories of the fellow player who didn't know what to do with Oak's parcel or couldn't grasp d-pad controls well enough to even get out of the house.
It's just most of those hurdles can be crossed by simple process of elimination, and Kanto never gets big enough that that's too much to ask of the player. You find Rock Tunnel by using your newfound cut power in previous locations, you find Cinnabar Island by surfing, Saffron City is in the center of map so you can't miss it, etc. The thirsty guards and the gold teeth are the only two I'd consider real zingers, since there's no real reason why they should be so important.
I can understand why kids might be tripped up by Sinnoh though, as Masuda's noting is often cited here; it asks the same of you but its a much bumpier road.
