The recolors are for the most part rarer, tougher versions versions of existing yokai one can get at random through a gashapon machine, while also adding to the lore of the line. See for example the descriptions of Shmoopie, its evolution Pinkipoo and the recolor of the evolution Pookivil respectively:

An embodiment of Pinkipoo's bad side."In their manipulative cuteness, Shmoopie and Pinkipoo heal team members and their ability increases chances of befriending yokai; meanwhile Pookivil, who shows its true colors, steals life from opponents to heal himself, and is stronger, but his ability decreaces chances of befriending yokai.
