As far out as it was, the original series had Gary driving around in a car, the games talked of an old war, team rocket done pretty generic criminal activities
As much as it clearly isn't the real world, my childhood head canon put it as a futuristic world, the pokeballs and weird tech was more sci-fi to me I think
