i blame it mostly on the roster of 900+ characters, but even mvc2 has a better ratio of usable characters than pokémon
i do feel like skill plays more of a part in pokémon than people make it out to though. statistical advantage is great but if i'm switching in pokémon that resist or null all your moves, you aren't going to win. of course you can't do that every single turn but a few hard reads pay dividends, especially now when everyone gets 3 stat boosts for free every game
if you have a fairy on the team (and you always should) you can make the dragapult guess on whether you're switching to it, so it should use a ghost move, or keeping falinks in, so it should use a dragon move. then it starts looking at coverage and you start looking at your other switch options, etc
