My biggest problem is the wasted potential. The mage RPG archetype Delphox represented in this starter trio is usually in its final form as a sage or some sort of wizard, but Delphox does not really represent that. Delphox still has a wand like Braixen's witch/apprentice motif where it should have a proper magic staff. Furthermore, its "nothing up my sleeve" shtick with using the wand is a downgrade from Braixen storing it in its tail and twirling it. More white fur on its body or even parts like its ear hair's tips could have shown both the sage aspect of a design and how its flames got hotter. Furthermore, a common endgame magic spell is meteor related(including Draco Meteor in pokemon), which Delphox could pull off given how often meteors are shown burning up on reentry, but instead its former signature move of Mystical Fire just kind of makes a circle with its fire and shoots it. A wizard's hat may have also helped, as shown by Mismagius at the time and leter by Hatterene(technically Murkrow too). What we're left is a poor representation of mages in standard RPGs and that's part of why people gravitate to a better representative in Braixen.
