You have a fully customization team, and you can do a lot of gyms and events out of order. The series has only become more linear as it went on, becoming open world would be a step back to older form.
I never understood the vehement dislike to the idea of open world Pokemon, even before open worlds became a hip thing people have talked about how Pokemon lends itself well to freedom.
