Got a response back from technical support about how weighted average is calculated for matrix questions: Each column has a weight equal to the number of column it is. So if there are 5 columns, Hate, Dislike, Neutral, Like, and Love, Hate responses are worth 1, Dislike 2, Neutral 3, etc.
So if 60 people voted hate, 30 people voted Dislike, 20 people voted neutral, 15 people voted for Like, and 12 people voted for Love, then each response would have an equal value.
What this means in practice is that if you are going to be looking at the weighted average values when determining the results, you have to be using the RATING SCALE question type, nor the matrix one, which are identical, except for rating scale you can choose the weighting of each answer, instead of it automatically being assigned in the manner described above.
