I really don't like how the Pokemon series has had a lot of gimmicks lately. In Gen 6 we got Mega Evolution. I thought it was ridiculous and over the top and joked to myself about getting Ultra Evolutions next gen. Surely enough we got that with Ultra Necrozma but referred to as Ultra Burst instead. Not to mention Z-moves are a thing. Every gen before 6 didn't have any gimmicks and they were just fine. It seems like they are just including gimmicks in the games for marketing value. On paper, that's fine, but it seems like they're using it as a crutch, rather than just a neat little addition. Think of it like sprinkles on a cake, with Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Alolan forms, etc. as being sprinkles, and the cake being the game itself. Pokemon is a cake with a shitload of sprinkles on it. The Pokemon franchise needs some frosting (difficulty modes), strawberries (better story), and maybe even some ice cream (save files, better online, etc.). What's the difference between sprinkles (Mega Evolution, Z-moves) and everything I listed above? Frosting adds taste. Strawberries add taste. Ice cream adds taste. What do sprinkles do? They look nice... that's it. This "cake" needs more "strawberries, ice cream, and frosting," rather than, "sprinkles". I hope that Pokemon on the Switch doesn't have any gimmicks, because they do more to hurt the game than help it.
