Nintendo fans shat on it. Same with other awful Nintendo products like Mario Tennis Aces, Hey! Pikmin, Chibi-Robo Ziplash, and Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival. When Nintendo releases a bad game, they get called out for it and it receives next to no sales.
Pokemon, on the other hand, is a different beast entirely. Modern Pokemon fans aren't actually fans of the games, they're fans of the series. The fans of the games don't buy the new slop put out, they just endlessly replay Gens 1 - 5 and the romhacks of those.
