Not entirely sure why Generation IV would ever be considered the best, other than because it eased the transition over from GBA to DS.
>DP
Feature-wise, it's best addition was the type split obviously, but that's it. The Poketch and Underground were pretty mediocre in terms of utilizing the touch screen. The whole cartridge system to encounter Pokemon feature was cute but not something I utilized in story mode. Pal Park was retarded. The Super Contests never peaked my interest. Story-wise, it was pretty boring, but that's not saying much. On my first play through of Pearl I spent a lot of time just reading through the guide to get to where I was going. The constant need for HM's is fucking ridiculous and Defog is the worst addition to the overworld in the entire series. Pokemon-wise, holy Christ the selection is terrible. Not even kidding, the DP Sinnoh Dex is objectively cancerous.
>Platinum
aw sheit nigga this game was a huge step up in a lot of ways. Playing through the story was a lot more bearable, the Giratina storyline is top-tier. The Distortion World is an excellent use of DS graphics. The Pokemon selection went from garbage to bretty gud 5/5 - a lot of my favorites are from Platinum's slew of cross-gen evos.
>HGSS
Pretty much all you'd want in GSC remakes. All the nostalgia of Generation II with better graphics, the features from III and IV, and the dual-screen set-up of the DS (which, IMO, used the touch screen the most effectively of any game up to ORAS). It also had cute post-game like the Hoenn legends, Sinnoh legends, Safari Zone, Pokathalon, etc. These games are considered one of the best, if not the best, contributions to the series.
>Revolution
Battle sims are boring, even if it vastly improves on the mechanics of older console games.
So, really, once you take out HGSS, Gen IV isn't bad at all. But the fact that Plat is so much better than DP renders those games obsolete. So, you really just have Plat to go by.
It's good, but not the best.
