How could it have done that? The DS era was just lazy RSE romhacks. Say what you will about the Switch era, it made huge mechanical and structural changes far beyond the dark DS ages.

Huh? Emerald doesn't have a bad Pokedex. Emerald doesn't have an incredibly slow engine. Emerald doesn't actively make the region it's set in worse. Emerald set the standard for Battle Frontiers, gen 4 was a lazy cut back.

I struggle to think of any problem Emerald shares with gen 4's slop, honestly. Emerald is peak Pokemon, DPPtHGSS is the absolute worst the franchise has to offer.

Fixed. Try replaying your favorite gen 4 game without an emulator. No speed hacks. See how long it takes you to fall asleep waiting for battles to start, HP bars to drain, LOTS OF DATA to save.

There will never be a Pokemon game worse or less ambitious than DPPt.
