They changed it because they didn't think it was a good idea for a kids' game to have evil monsters you can play and bond with. "Fairy" is perfectly benign and there's no reason whatsoever to censor it. Also, "Fairy" isn't the opposite of "Evil" so you can't use the argument that we need a Light type to go with Dark. They're not supposed to be opposites.
