I don't know if you have access to trade evolutions, but Machamp or even Hitmonlee will do you much better than Gen I Mankey. Gyarados is pretty sick Gen I, I used it in my Autismlocke, but it gets amazing in later gens once it gets Intimidate, or even further beyond once it gets physical water moves.
