People hate Hoenn because it seems just like a huge failed experiment. GF did some really inexcusable shit in Gen III:
>Nincada, unique Bug/Ground typing, loses its unique typing and becomes generic Bug/Flying
>Surskit, unique Bug/Water typing, loses its unique typing and becomes Bug/Flying
I will never forgive GF for that shit. What the hell is the point in making a Pokemon with a unique type combination and make it lose it when it evolves? You just can't get more stupid. And what makes it especially inexcusable is that Bug/Flying is a horrible generic typing and Gen III already introduced Beautifly.

>No variety in the multiple water routes
Literally 50% of the game is water, but instead of filling the water routes with Relicanth, Wailmer, Luvdisc, Corphish, Carvanha, Barboach, Spheal, and some older Pokemon like Mantine, Remoraid, Qwilfish, Seel and Staryu, and thus making some variety to resemble non-water routes, it's just Tentacool and Wingull. 50% of the game is Tentacoll and Wingull. Not only that, but water routes are also boring in general. While on land, you have different kinds of grass, caves, cliffs, bike exclusive routes, weather effects, buildings and so on. While on water, you have water. Just water and some occasional rocks to block your way.

And finally, when people compared Ruby/Sapphire to Crystal, this is what they thought:
>No day/night
>No moving sprites
>No backwards compatibility
I played Sapphire for the first time nine years ago, and even then I thought it wasn't as good as Gen I & II. Of course as a child I loved the cool new graphics that were superior compared to GBC standards but the game itself wasn't as good. And today, having played through all Gens multiple times, I still think Gen III is the weakest. That being said, Gen III is not bad, it's just not as good as the others.
